It was on average 91 degrees in New Orleans on this year’s July 4th weekend as the city known for its rich culture, history, amazing food and jazz is also the gateway to the beginning many of life’s memories.
So what better place is there to celebrate twenty (20) years of art, culture, entertainment and empowerment with almost 500,000 people and Essence Magazine?
The schedule alone was electric, with the king of all things purple, Prince, Mary J. Blige, and Jill Scott, as well as empowerment panel discussions with Nia Long, Steve Harvey and TD Jakes.
There were performances by rap pioneers Rapper’s Delight (formerly The Sugar Hill Gang) and Full Force who introduced classic and classy hip hop to the new generation of listeners and took those who grew with them, on a nostalgic journey.
Rapper Delight, Wonder Mike and Master Gee are 2 of the 3 original members of The Sugarhill Gang. They are the iconic rappers known for commercializing Hip-Hop and taking it mainstream around the world. They co-wrote and recorded “Rapper’s Delight,” one of the most famous songs in American culture and throughout the world. “Rapper’s Delight” was inducted in the Library of Congress in 2011; in 2014, it was inducted in the Grammy Hall of Fame and a major celebration is set for August of this year to celebrate its 35th anniversary.
In addition to Rapper’s Delight, Wonder Mike and Master Gee co-wrote and were recorded on dozens of other super successful songs including “Apache (Jump On It),” “Eighth Wonder,” and, in 2009, “The LaLa Song” with Bob Sinclar, which became a huge international hit. Wonder Mike and Master Gee perform as Rapper’s Delight along with other very talented musicians. Together, they bring you a show that leaves you feeling energized, hearing all those great songs you love. Their newest project is “Club On Lock,” which released in June of this year (2014).
