71st Primetime Emmy Awards Predictions

Published

on

This Sunday will be the 71stPrimetime Emmy Awards and in its final season, Game of Thrones dominated the nominations. The HBO drama landed a record 32 nominations, setting the record for the most noms for a show in a single year. HBO also earned 137 nominations topping its own record for most noms for a network in a single year (it landed 126 in 2015). As we all know about the final season of Thrones, it wasn’t that good, but here we are. Let’s get down to business as I bring you my predictions on who’ll win in the major categories.

·      Outstanding Comedy Series

  • Barry
  • Fleabag
  • The Good Place
  • The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
  • Russian Doll
  • Schitt’s Creek
  • Veep
  • What Will Win: The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
  • What Should Win: This, for me, is a close race between Barry andThe Good Place. They’ve both had outstanding seasons, both equally deserved of the recognition they’re receiving, but the Academy loves Maisel. The Good Placeshould win as Barry can win one another year. In it’s upcoming final season, The Good Place will show why it truly is one of the best shows today. I’m also still a little pissed that Mrs. Maisel won over Atlanta last year.

·      Outstanding Drama Series

The unfortunate favorite
  • Better Call Saul
  • Bodyguard
  • Game of Thrones
  • Killing Eve
  • Ozark
  • Pose
  • Succession
  • This Is Us
  • What Will Win: Game of Thrones
  • What Should Win: GOT sucked this season. We can all agree on that. It shouldn’t win this award at all. The sleeper here is Pose. It had a critically-acclaimed season. For me, I think Ozark will walk away with the trophy. The sophomore season was phenomenal even better than the first. Not many talked about it and more should.

·      Outstanding Limited Series

  • Chernobyl
  • Escape at Dannemora
  • Fosse/Verdon
  • Sharp Objects
  • When They See Us
  • What Will Win: When They See Us
  • What Should Win: This is a three horse between ChernobylSharp Objects, and When They See Us. This is hands down the toughest race I’ve seen in a long time. Chernobyl was equal parts amazing and disturbing. Sharp Objects was just a great character study in the mind of a mother not wanting to let go. When They See Uswas a tour de force! It came in like a tidal wave and opened many eyes to what black people have known all along. Every time you watch it, you can’t be help but be disgusted and ask yourself, “WHY?”

·      Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series

  • Emilia Clarke, Game of Thrones
  • Jodie Comer, Killing Eve
  • Viola Davis, How To Get Away With Murder
  • Laura Linney, Ozark
  • Mandy Moore, This Is Us
  • Sandra Oh, Killing Eve
  • Robin Wright, House Of Cards
  • Who Will Win: I honestly have no clue.
  • Who Should Win: As long as it’s not Emilia Clarke. Like I said earlier, Game of Throneswasn’t good in its final season. I’d actually be fine with any one of these women winning.

·      Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series

  • Jason Bateman, Ozark
  • Sterling K. Brown, This Is Us
  • Kit Harington, Game of Thrones
  • Bob Odenkirk, Better Call Saul
  • Billy Porter, Pose
  • Milo Ventimiglia, This Is Us
  • Who Will Win: Billy Porter
  • Who Should Win: Billy Porteris taking this home. I don’t know what else needs to be said. Sometimes when you don’t know the answer, you just go with your gut.
Could Billy Porter pull the upset?

·      Outstanding Supporting Actor in A Drama Series

  • Alfie Allen, Game of Thrones
  • Jonathan Banks, Better Call Saul
  • Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Game of Thrones
  • Peter Dinklage, Game of Thrones
  • Giancarlo Esposito, Better Call Saul
  • Michael Kelly, House of Cards
  • Chris Sullivan, This Is Us
  • Who Will Win: Peter Dinklage
  • Who Should Win: Throughout it all, the one consistent on Game of Thrones has been Peter Dinklage. Although it wasn’t good, that’s not to say that the acting was bad, and that is definitely true of Peter Dinklage. His acting has helped carry the series through the good and bad, and he deserves all of the credit in the world.

·      Outstanding Supporting Actress in A Drama Series

  • Gwendoline Christie, Game of Thrones
  • Julia Garner, Ozark
  • Lena Headey, Game of Thrones
  • Fiona Shaw, Killing Eve
  • Sophie Turner, Game of Thrones
  • Maisie Williams, Game of Thrones
  • Who Will Win: This is another grouping where I don’t who will win.
  • Who Should Win: I honestly don’t know, and I’ll roll a die. Sophie Turner will win. I’m fine with that.

·      Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series

  • Anthony Anderson, Black-ish
  • Don Cheadle, Black Monday
  • Ted Danson, The Good Place
  • Michael Douglas, The Kominsky Method
  • Bill Hader, Barry
  • Eugene Levy, Schitt’s Creek
  • Who Will Win: Bill Hader
  • Who Should Win: Bill Hader will be taking this one. It’s virtually his race to lose. Coming of the heels IT: Chapter 2, Hader was already a star, but he’s been gaining steam with Barry, and I truly would love to see him on that stage accepting the award.
Peeking down on their category

·      Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series

  • Christina Applegate, Dead to Me
  • Rachel Brosnahan, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
  • Julie Louis-Dreyfus, Veep
  • Natasha Lyonne, Russian Doll
  • Catherine O’Hara, Schitt’s Creek
  • Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Fleabag
  • Who Will Win: Rachel Brosnahan
  • Who Should Win: As much as I expect Rachel Brosnahan to win, Christina Applegate was nothing short special and magical. I was in true amazement of the work she put. Dead to Me and Netflix owe a debt to her.

·      Outstanding Supporting Actor in A Comedy Series

  • Alan Arkin, The Kominsky Method
  • Anthony Carrigan,Barry
  • Tony Hale, Veep
  • Stephen Root, Barry
  • Tony Shalhoub, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
  • Henry Winkler, Barry
  • Who Will Win: Henry Winkler
  • Who Should Win: This is a fun race right here. All men are truly deserving, but I just love what Henry Winkler has been doing in Barry.
  • Outstanding Supporting Actress in A Comedy Series
  • Alex Borstein, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
  • Anna Chlumsky, Veep
  • Sian Clifford, Fleabag
  • Olivia Colman, Fleabag
  • Betty Gilpin,GLOW
  • Sarah Goldberg, Barry
  • Marin Hinkle,The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
  • Kate McKinnon, Saturday Night Live
  • Who Will Win: Betty Gilpin
  • Who Should Win: Betty Gilpin has grown year after year on GLOW. She shined during the third season and I’d love to see her get rewarded for it.
The glorious ladies have a sweet ride

·      Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie

  • Mahershala Ali, True Detective
  • Benicio Del Toro, Escape to Dannemora
  • Jared Harris, Chernobyl
  • Jharrel Jerome, When They See Us
  • Hugh Grant, A Very English Scandal
  • Who Will Win: Jharrel Jerome
  • Who Should Win: Go watch When They See Us. Then watch it again. Think about it. Watch it one it one more time, and then tell me why Jharrel Jerome shouldn’t win the award.

·      Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie

  • Amy Adams, Sharp Objects
  • Patricia Arquette, Escape to Dannemora
  • Aunjanue Ellis, When They See Us
  • Joey King, The Act
  • Niecy Nash,When They See U
  • Michelle Williams,Fosse/Verdon
  • Who Will Win: Amy Adams
  • Who Should Win: As much as I love the other women in this category, and they’ve all done fantastic jobs, but Amy Adams was something else. She had me gritting my teeth, feeling her pain and tears, and ultimately, seeing the amazing the work she did each and every week made me want to stand up and cheer.

·      Outstanding Supporting Actor in A Limited Series or Movie

  • Asante Blackk, When They See Us
  • Paul Dano, Escape at Dannemora
  • John Leguizamo, When They See Us
  • Stellan Skarsgård, Chernobyl
  • Ben Whishaw, A Very English Scandal
  • Michael K. Williams, When They See Us
  • Who Will Win: Stellan Skarsgård,
  • Who Should Win: When They See Us could very well clean up this year, but it would be a travesty if Chernobyldidn’t win an award, and I think that this is the category where it takes one home. Stellan Skarsgård was stellar during this series and I’d love to see him do more roles like this.
You’ve almost made it, just one more.

·      Outstanding Supporting Actress in A Limited Series or Movie

  • Patricia Arquette, The Act
  • Marsha Stephanie Blake, When They See Us
  • Patricia Clarkson,Sharp Objects
  • Vera Farmiga, When They See Us
  • Margaret Qualley, Fosse/Verdon
  • Emily Watson, Chernobyl
  • Who Will Win: Vera Farmiga
  • Who Should Win: All of the women here are more than worthy of the honor. I think Vera will in just to stamp When They See Us into the history books, but Patricia Clarkson truly gave terrifyingly and scary good performance. I wanted nothing more than to hate her, and when you can arise that sort of reaction from someone, then you deserve praise.

The Magnificent Seven!

Published

on

With the Snyder Cut of Justice League finally being released this month, I thought it’d be fun to take a look at all of the live-action incarnations of comics greatest superhero team. No, I didn’t stutter and you know I’m right. If you don’t know, the Justice League consists of the greatest heroes in DC Comics. “The Magnificent Seven” as they’re know are comprised of Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Green Lantern, Aquaman, and Martian Manhunter with Manhunter later being replaced by Cyborg in updated and current versions of the team. They come together when just one hero isn’t enough. If you’re like a lot of mainstream fans, you’ll most likely know the team from the astounding and near perfect animated series that aired on Cartoon Network but that’s not why we’re here. Let’s get into the meat and potatoes of it all.

Zack Snyder’s Justice League | Official Trailer #2 | HBO Max – YouTube

Honorable Mention

Justice League: Mortal

This incarnation of the team never came to fruition. Famed director George Miller was attached to direct with a budget of around  $220 million. The casting left something to be desired. D.J. Catrona was cast as Superman, Armie Hammer as Batman, Megan Gale as Wonder Woman, and Teresa Palmer, whom auditioned for the Wonder Woman role, was cast as Talia al Ghul. I’m only on board with Armie Hammer as the Caped Crusader, but everyone else can kick rocks. They don’t make a lick of sense and that especially goes for Teresa Palmer as the Daughter of the Demon. Two of the better casting choices, Common as Green Lantern John Stewart and Adam Brody as the Barry Allen version of the Flash, are solid but I honestly believe that Brody would have been better served as Wally West. The best casting decision was Jay Baruchel as Maxwell Lord.

There were many reasons that this movie didn’t come forth. The Writers Strike happened and production had to be delayed for three months which caused the options of the cast to lapse. The movie was supposed to be filmed in Australia but the Australian government denied Warner Bros a 40% tax rebate as they felt that there weren’t enough Australian actors hired. There were more delays and the success of The Dark Knight caused Warner Bros to focus on singular films.

Justice League

If the reviews are to be believed, then the Joss Whedon directed version of the film will be long forgotten. Joss Whedon had to finish Snyder’s film due to a family tragedy. He ended up cutting much of what Snyder intended including removing a majority Cyborg’s scenes and story as he was clearly intended to be the focal point of the film. If you’ve seen one Joss Whedon film or TV show, then you’ve seen them all and you know what to expect and that is very much true here. What Snyder had set forth has largely been forgotten with Whedon putting his usual flair on the writing. If you’ve been living under a rock then you know all about the claims made by Ray Fisher. The racism, the treatment by Whedon, and so much more. The less said about this film, the better.

Legends of the Superheroes

This 1979 two-part television special featured the most famous Batman and Robin at the time, the late Adam West and Burt Ward. Other heroes included Black Canary, Captain Marvel [now Shazam], Flash, Green Lantern, Hawkman, Huntress and many more. This one was mostly played for laughs.

Smallville

The decades long comic book series had their own version of the League featuring Clark Kent, the Flash, Cyborg, Green Arrow, and Aquaman. The characters were all introduced in previous episodes where they were given proper introductions. Chloe Sullivan, Clark’s long time best friend, acted as the surrogate Oracle using the code name “Watchtower”. Later in the series, they were joined by Black Canary and Martian Manhunter with Manhunter having a prominent tutor-like role on the show. Smallville also gave us the first time live-action iteration of the Justice Society of America.

Arrowverse

A combination of the CW Arrowverse shows, this Justice League featured characters from the various shows. With the ending of Crisis on Infinite Earths, the amalgamation of Earth-Prime (Earth-1, Earth-38, and Black Lightning’s Earth) needed a team for such an occasion where one hero wouldn’t be enough. Taking on the Anti-Monitor, all of the heroes were needed. If you know DC Comics, you know that when the words “Crisis” are uttered, it’s about to go down, In the end, our heroes were successful but not without suffering a great loss. Oliver Queen after becoming the Spectre, sacrificed himself for the greater good. The Arrowverse team consists of White Canary, The Flash, Supergirl, Batwoman, Martian Manhunter, Black Lightning, Superman, and an empty seat to honor the man who started it all, Green Arrow.
