2019 Academy Predictions

Published

on

This coming Sunday will be the 91st Academy Awards and there’s no host this year, I’m sure it’ll be a show. There are some nice choices in all the categories, but the Academy rarely gets it right, as there are some snubs that would probably change the outcome of some of these awards.

  • Best Picture:
    • “Black Panther”
      “BlacKkKlansman”
      “Bohemian Rhapsody”
      “The Favourite”
      “Green Book”
      “Roma”
      “A Star Is Born”
      “Vice”
  • Who should win: This isn’t the best year for the Best Picture category as the perceived favorite in my opinion, If Beale Street Could Talk, wasn’t nominated. I also think that Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verseshould’ve been nominated, too. It astounds me that the Best Picture category can have up to ten nominations and rarely are ten selected. Black Panther should win. It’s both critically acclaimed and just an overall good movie.
  • Who will win: Probably A Star is Bornor The Favourite. Tha Academy loves tragedy and the British.
  • Snub:Besides the two I mentioned above, A Quiet Place should’ve been given a shot. It’s wonderfully directed. The acting is top notch. The suspense will get you. There’s no reason for it not to be included.
  • Lead Actor:
    • Christian Bale, “Vice”
Bradley Cooper, “A Star Is Born”
      Willem Dafoe, “At Eternity’s Gate”
      Rami Malek, “Bohemian Rhapsody”
      Viggo Mortensen, “Green Book”
  • Who should win: This also isn’t a good year for the Lead Actor category. Everyone nominated has done a good job but no one really stands out. I’d give this to Rami Malek for this performance as Freddy Mercury.
  • Who will in: Willem Dafoe will take it as the most out of left field winner we’ve had in a long while.
  • Snub: John David Washington, BlacKkKlansman. Somehow, Adam Driver was nominated and John David Washington wasn’t. Playing the real-life police Officer, Ron Stallworth, should’ve garnered him a nod.
  • Lead Actress:
    • Yalitza Aparicio, “Roma”
      Glenn Close, “The Wife”
      Olivia Colman, “The Favourite”
Lady Gaga, “A Star Is Born”
Melissa McCarthy, “Can You Ever Forgive Me?”
  • Who should win: Melissa McCarthy all day. She’s already a superstar, but Can You Ever Forgive Me? just elevated her beyond. She was phenomenal. There’s nothing more that can be said.
  • Who will in: Olivia Colman. She’s an unknown to American audiences. She’s also British. The Academy loves doing wild things. I would not be shocked when Olivia wins.
  • Snub: I’ve two for you, Toni Collette for Hereditary, and Nicole Kidman for Destroyer. I want you to watch both of those films and ask yourself how these two leading ladies weren’t nominated. It is a crowded field this year, so that can be the Academy’s excuse.
  • Supporting Actor:
    • Mahershala Ali, “Green Book”
      Adam Driver, “BlacKkKlansman”
Sam Elliott, “A Star Is Born”
Richard E. Grant, “Can You Ever Forgive Me?”
      Sam Rockwell, “Vice”
  • Who should win: Now this is a solid field. All of these men are very talented and deserving. Sam Elliot should take this home. He really did some amazing work in A Star is Born.
  • Who will win: Sam Elliot. This is his to lose.
  • Supporting Actress:
    • Amy Adams, “Vice”
      Marina de Tavira, “Roma”
Regina King, “If Beale Street Could Talk”
      Emma Stone, “The Favourite”
      Rachel Weisz, “The Favourite”
  • Who should win: It seems like Amy Adams is nominated every other year and this year isn’t any different. I’d take her but Regina King absolutely destroyed it in If Beale Street Could Talk. She SHOULD win this.
  • Who will in: Roma is a really good film, and this is one of those times where it may get shut out in a lot of major categories and still wins at least one. I think this will be the one and Marina de Tavira will take it home.
  • Director:
    • Spike Lee, “BlacKkKlansman”
      Pawel Pawlikowski, “Cold War”
      Yorgos Lanthimos, “The Favourite”
      Alfonso Cuarón, “Roma”
      Adam McKay, “Vice”
  • Who should win: Do the right thing and just give it Spike.
  • Who will in: SPIKE LEE!!!!!!!! (Yes, I’m biased.)
  • Snub: Bradley Cooper, A Star is Born. The Academy does not like actors stepping into the director’s chair. It happened to Angelina Jolie (“Unbroken”). It happened to Ben Affleck (“Argo”). It now has happened to Bradley. I would’ve nominated him over Adam McKay. Bradley was a sure-fire lock this year.
  • Animated Feature:
    • “Incredibles 2,” Brad Bird
      “Isle of Dogs,” Wes Anderson
      “Mirai,” Mamoru Hosoda
“Ralph Breaks the Internet,” Rich Moore, Phil Johnston
“Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, Rodney Rothman
  • Who should win: This is a really good field, but there’s only one film that should win and it’s not The Incredibles 2. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is an amazing movie. You can make the argument for it being the best movie of the year. The story was great. The animation was beyond belief. The soundtrack is off the charts. It’s a near flawless movie.
  • Who will in: Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse for every reason I stated above.
  • Animated Short:
    • “Animal Behaviour,” Alison Snowden, David Fine
      “Bao,” Domee Shi
      “Late Afternoon,” Louise Bagnall
“One Small Step,” Andrew Chesworth, Bobby Pontillas
      “Weekends,” Trevor Jimenez
  • Who should win: Bao is the only one that comes to mind. It stands out so much. It’s vivid portrayal of a mother dealing her son growing up and moving on, caught everyone’s attention and not just because it was premiered alongside The Incredibles 2.
  • Who will in: Bao will take this one.
  • Adapted Screenplay:
    • “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs,” Joel Coen , Ethan Coen
“BlacKkKlansman,” Charlie Wachtel, David Rabinowitz, Kevin Willmott, Spike Lee
“Can You Ever Forgive Me?,” Nicole Holofcener and Jeff Whitty
“If Beale Street Could Talk,” Barry Jenkins
“A Star Is Born,” Eric Roth, Bradley Cooper, Will Fetters
  • Who should win: The Coen brothers are Academy darlings but once again, I’m going to let my bias show, Spike should take this home. He has not gotten enough love from the Academy, but I could see Barry Jenkins win this as a consolation for Beale Street not being nominated for Best Picture.
  • Who will in: SPIKE!!!
  • Original Screenplay:
    • “The Favourite,” Deborah Davis, Tony McNamara
      “First Reformed,” Paul Schrader
“Green Book,” Nick Vallelonga, Brian Currie, Peter Farrelly
      “Roma,” Alfonso Cuarón
      “Vice,” Adam McKay
  • Who should win: I’ve actually not heard of First Reformed and I don’t think a lot of people have either. Adam McKay is the popular choice here, but I think The Favourite is taking this one home. It’s the closest thing we have to “Oscar Film” in this category.
  • Who will win: Roma. Netflix needs to get win on the big stage and this might be their best bet.
  • Cinematography:
    • “Cold War,” Lukasz Zal
      “The Favourite,” Robbie Ryan
      “Never Look Away,” Caleb Deschanel
      “Roma,” Alfonso Cuarón
“A Star Is Born,” Matthew Libatique
  • Who should win: This is a very good field and all are more than capable of taking home the award, but I think Roma has this one in the bag. It’s just beautifully shot. Everything from the aesthetic to the costumes look amazing and that comes down to the Cinematographer.
  • Who will win: Roma, for every reason I stated above.
  • Best Documentary Feature:
    • “Free Solo,” Jimmy Chin, Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi
“Hale County This Morning, This Evening,” RaMell Ross
      “Minding the Gap,” Bing Liu
“Of Fathers and Sons,” Talal Derki
      “RBG,” Betsy West, Julie Cohen
  • Who should win: This is Minding the Gap’s race to lose. The sleeper in this one is RBG. The power of Ruth is quite strong.
  • Who will win: Minding the Gap. There’s little to no chance of it losing.
  • Snub: Won’t You Be My Neighbor? The Academy snubbed Mr. Rogers and that’s a big no-no in my book. I truly believe if it was nominated, it would’ve won.
  • Original Song:
    • “All The Stars” from “Black Panther” by Kendrick Lamar, SZA
“I’ll Fight” from “RBG” by Diane Warren, Jennifer Hudson
“The Place Where Lost Things Go” from “Mary Poppins Returns” by Marc Shaiman, Scott Wittman
“Shallow” from “A Star Is Born” by Lady Gaga, Mark Ronson, Anthony Rossomando, Andrew Wyatt and Benjamin Rice
“When A Cowboy Trades His Spurs For Wings” from “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs” by David Rawlings and Gillian Welch
  • Who should win: All the Stars. It’s the biggest song from the biggest, culturally popular, much-loved movie of 2018. It’s also a great song.
  • Who will win: All the Stars. Kendrick Lamar helped produce a movie soundtrack unlike any other. He’s got a Grammy and the Oscar would just be the icing on top.

The Magnificent Seven!

Published

on

With the Snyder Cut of Justice League finally being released this month, I thought it’d be fun to take a look at all of the live-action incarnations of comics greatest superhero team. No, I didn’t stutter and you know I’m right. If you don’t know, the Justice League consists of the greatest heroes in DC Comics. “The Magnificent Seven” as they’re know are comprised of Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Green Lantern, Aquaman, and Martian Manhunter with Manhunter later being replaced by Cyborg in updated and current versions of the team. They come together when just one hero isn’t enough. If you’re like a lot of mainstream fans, you’ll most likely know the team from the astounding and near perfect animated series that aired on Cartoon Network but that’s not why we’re here. Let’s get into the meat and potatoes of it all.

Zack Snyder’s Justice League | Official Trailer #2 | HBO Max – YouTube

Honorable Mention

Justice League: Mortal

This incarnation of the team never came to fruition. Famed director George Miller was attached to direct with a budget of around  $220 million. The casting left something to be desired. D.J. Catrona was cast as Superman, Armie Hammer as Batman, Megan Gale as Wonder Woman, and Teresa Palmer, whom auditioned for the Wonder Woman role, was cast as Talia al Ghul. I’m only on board with Armie Hammer as the Caped Crusader, but everyone else can kick rocks. They don’t make a lick of sense and that especially goes for Teresa Palmer as the Daughter of the Demon. Two of the better casting choices, Common as Green Lantern John Stewart and Adam Brody as the Barry Allen version of the Flash, are solid but I honestly believe that Brody would have been better served as Wally West. The best casting decision was Jay Baruchel as Maxwell Lord.

There were many reasons that this movie didn’t come forth. The Writers Strike happened and production had to be delayed for three months which caused the options of the cast to lapse. The movie was supposed to be filmed in Australia but the Australian government denied Warner Bros a 40% tax rebate as they felt that there weren’t enough Australian actors hired. There were more delays and the success of The Dark Knight caused Warner Bros to focus on singular films.

Justice League

If the reviews are to be believed, then the Joss Whedon directed version of the film will be long forgotten. Joss Whedon had to finish Snyder’s film due to a family tragedy. He ended up cutting much of what Snyder intended including removing a majority Cyborg’s scenes and story as he was clearly intended to be the focal point of the film. If you’ve seen one Joss Whedon film or TV show, then you’ve seen them all and you know what to expect and that is very much true here. What Snyder had set forth has largely been forgotten with Whedon putting his usual flair on the writing. If you’ve been living under a rock then you know all about the claims made by Ray Fisher. The racism, the treatment by Whedon, and so much more. The less said about this film, the better.

Legends of the Superheroes

This 1979 two-part television special featured the most famous Batman and Robin at the time, the late Adam West and Burt Ward. Other heroes included Black Canary, Captain Marvel [now Shazam], Flash, Green Lantern, Hawkman, Huntress and many more. This one was mostly played for laughs.

Smallville

The decades long comic book series had their own version of the League featuring Clark Kent, the Flash, Cyborg, Green Arrow, and Aquaman. The characters were all introduced in previous episodes where they were given proper introductions. Chloe Sullivan, Clark’s long time best friend, acted as the surrogate Oracle using the code name “Watchtower”. Later in the series, they were joined by Black Canary and Martian Manhunter with Manhunter having a prominent tutor-like role on the show. Smallville also gave us the first time live-action iteration of the Justice Society of America.

Arrowverse

A combination of the CW Arrowverse shows, this Justice League featured characters from the various shows. With the ending of Crisis on Infinite Earths, the amalgamation of Earth-Prime (Earth-1, Earth-38, and Black Lightning’s Earth) needed a team for such an occasion where one hero wouldn’t be enough. Taking on the Anti-Monitor, all of the heroes were needed. If you know DC Comics, you know that when the words “Crisis” are uttered, it’s about to go down, In the end, our heroes were successful but not without suffering a great loss. Oliver Queen after becoming the Spectre, sacrificed himself for the greater good. The Arrowverse team consists of White Canary, The Flash, Supergirl, Batwoman, Martian Manhunter, Black Lightning, Superman, and an empty seat to honor the man who started it all, Green Arrow.
