‘YU-GI-OH!’ Tournament Analysis: Regional in Brooklyn, New York

Published

by Martin Weiss

As players of the “YU-GI-OH! Trading Card Game” welcomed the November 9, 2015 forbidden/limited list, they reminisce of the cards that are now forbidden but were allowed during the July 16, 2015. Cards that made an impact in a duel that are now forbidden include Apoqliphort Towers, Shurit, Strategist of the Nekroz, Evilswarm Exciton Knight, and El Shaddoll Construct. Players wanted an opportunity to play those cards for the last time.

The last regional in the United States that followed the July 16, 2015 forbidden/limited list was at the Aviator Sports and Events Center in Brooklyn, New York on Sunday, November 8, 2015. This was the last opportunity for players in the northeast United States to earn invitations to the 2016 North American World Championship Qualifer with decks that are affected by the new forbidden/limited list. These decks include (but are not limited to) Shaddoll, Nekroz, Burning Abyss, and Qliphort.

At the start of round one, there were 246 players in the tournament, enough for eight rounds of of best two-out-of-three match play, with invitations to the 2016 North American World Championship Qualifier awarded to the top 32 finishers.

Among the most played decks in the tournament were Shaddoll, Qliphort, Burning Abyss, Tellarknight, Kozmo, and Nekroz. Other decks that were played in the tournament included (but were not limited to) Ritual Beast, Igknight, Yang Zing, and PSY-Frame.

In the end, Joseph Bogli, who is from Connecticut, won the regional with a record of eight wins, zero losses. The deck that Bogli used was Majespecter Performage. Finishing in sixth place was Vincent Yu, who plays at Alternate Universes-Blue Bell. His record was seven wins, one loss. The deck Yu used in the tournament was Burning Abyss.

Akuma in Resident Evil 2?!?!

Published

on

Originally published in April 1998 as an April Fool’s joke in EGM (Electronic Gaming Monthly), Akuma was rumored to be an unlockable character within the PlayStation original, Resident Evil 2. To unlock the famed Street Fighter character, players must play through both scenarios of the game six times, while only using a knife and handgun to achieve an A ranking in all of them. When you start the seventh playthrough, play until you reach the computer console. Instead of typing “GUEST”, players must type in “AKUMA” causing players to transform into the character.

26 years later, the April Fools joke was brought to life. Modders Captain Kashup, Snipz, and Zky created Akuma Mode, a mod for Resident Evil 2 that allows players to use Akuma, the tatsumaki, and fire ball to defeat your enemies. Find 8 special zombies for a secret ending.
